It’s that time of year again. Spring has arrived and most of us are ready to start cleaning up from the harshness of Maryland’s Winter months. The cold temperatures that we experience through the Winter bring snow, sleet and salt and they can be hard on our homes. Below are a few suggestions that may help you get your home back in tip-top shape.
Start by inspecting your roof. Winter brings both freezing and thawing which can be very damaging to the surface of your roof. Early Spring is a good time to inspect the surface of your roof for any loose shingles or obvious cracks and leaks. If left unchecked, the damage that can occur can be very costly. If you do discover an obvious leak or moisture build up, repair the leak before trying to address the stains it has created.
Thoroughly examine each exterior window and door of your home for bent or broken hinges and frames. Look for cracked or separated caulking that needs to be reapplied. Also, it’s a good idea to check for torn weather strips or screens that have ripped or pulled free from their edges. Repairing these items can lesson your utility expenditures over the course of the Summer months.
Once again, freezing and thawing and surface salt can create cracks in the surfaces of your driveway and walkways. As the moderate temperatures return, it may be a good time to power wash and reseal your driveway to prevent additional long-term damage.
Buildup from leaves and other tree droppings should be removed from your gutters to clear the way for Spring showers. Creating a clear pathway for the water to drain will prevent damage in other areas of your home. Inspect your gutters for bends and breaks that can occur with the buildup of water and ice. If repairs need to be made, it’s a good idea to call a professional to assist you with this project or any project that involves climbing up on a ladder.
Inspect your hose bibs and faucets to be sure that water is running as it should be and the water pressure has not changed from the previous year. If you do see a significant change, have your pipes inspected for damage.
As with any other exterior surface, your deck and patio can suffer from long term exposure to the elements. It’s a good idea to pressure wash your deck at the start of the outdoor season to remove any dirt or damaging residue. Reseal it as needed.
