Interior Design and Your Coastal Custom Home
As a custom homebuilder on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, many of the homes that we build are waterfront. Whether it’s the Chesapeake Bay or the Miles River, the views can be breathtaking. Using our design/build expertise, we create interior spaces that complement these spectacular surroundings. From distressed floors to whitewashed shiplap, we incorporate interior elements with nature in mind – using colors and textures that blend well with each home’s natural surroundings.
PAQUIN Design / Build provides interior selection and design services with every home we build. I recently sat down with our interior designer, Dawn Crovo, and asked her how she would approach design on an Eastern Shore waterfront home and she was able to share some valuable insight.
My approach to designing waterfront interiors is to draw insight from the natural elements outside to the interiors of the home. I like to take my inspiration from the natural elements and colors found in the waterfront view. The color palette should be fresh and light and not compete with the exterior surroundings. I use subtle accent color on the trim and doors to add dimension to the space. I avoid shiny elements that can become distracting when the sun is streaming into the space. I love to incorporate weathered and sun-washed wood tones to accents and case goods and keep the furnishings and textiles neutral which opens the opportunity to add seasonal, bright pops of fun color throughout the seasons. Floors should be carefree, hand-scraped wide plank that hold up to sandy feet and muddy paws. Kitchen and bath cabinetry, flooring and fixtures should be consistent from room to room using a light and uncomplicated palette.
